Diplomacy Player Guide

Manage your nation’s relationships with other nations. Form alliances, declare war, negotiate peace, and control who can siege whom.

The Basics

Every pair of nations has one of three relationships:

StatusWhat it means
NeutralDefault state. No special ties. Sieges between you are blocked until war is declared.
AllianceYou are formal allies. Towny treats you as allies too. You cannot siege each other.
WarYou are at war. Sieges against each other’s towns are allowed.

Declaring war does not start a siege by itself. It only unlocks the ability to plant siege banners. Accepting peace ends any active sieges between the two nations.

Alliances

Alliances require mutual consent. One nation proposes; the other accepts or denies.

Propose an alliance

  • /diplomacy alliance propose <nation>Send an alliance offer

Respond to a proposal

  • /diplomacy alliance accept <nation>Accept and become allies
  • /diplomacy alliance deny <nation>Decline the offer

Break an alliance (or cancel your own proposal)

  • /diplomacy alliance break <nation>End the alliance or withdraw your pending proposal

Good to know:

  • Proposals expire after a set time (server-configured, often several hours).
  • Accepting an alliance also adds both nations as Towny allies, so SiegeWar treats you as teammates.
  • You cannot form diplomacy with your own nation.
Declaring War

War is a one-sided declaration. The other nation does not need to accept.

  • /diplomacy war declare <nation>Set your relationship to War

Once at war you may plant siege banners on the other nation’s towns (subject to normal SiegeWar rules). You still cannot siege mutual Towny allies.

Good to know:

  • Declaring war does not automatically start a siege — you still have to plant the banner.
  • Depending on server settings, you may or may not be allowed to declare war on a current ally.
  • There can be a cooldown before you can re-declare war on the same nation.
Making Peace

Peace also requires mutual consent while you are at war.

Propose peace

  • /diplomacy peace propose <nation>Offer to end the war

Accept peace

  • /diplomacy peace accept <nation>Accept; relationship returns to Neutral and active sieges between you end

When peace is accepted, any ongoing sieges between the two nations are automatically removed.

Checking Relationships
  • /diplomacy status <nation>See the relationship between your nation and another
  • /diplomacy listList your nation’s current wars and alliances

Staff can also use /diplomacy all to see every active war and alliance on the server.

How This Affects Sieges

If siege enforcement is enabled (the usual setting), planting a siege banner is only allowed when:

  • Your nations are at War, and
  • You are not mutual Towny allies.

Revolts are never blocked by Diplomacy. Towns that do not belong to a nation can still be sieged as normal.

If someone tries to siege while the conditions are not met, the attempt is cancelled and recorded in the audit log.

Quick Reference
  • /diplomacy alliance propose <nation>Propose an alliance
  • /diplomacy alliance accept <nation>Accept an alliance
  • /diplomacy alliance deny <nation>Deny an alliance
  • /diplomacy alliance break <nation>Break alliance or cancel proposal
  • /diplomacy war declare <nation>Declare war
  • /diplomacy peace propose <nation>Propose peace
  • /diplomacy peace accept <nation>Accept peace (ends sieges)
  • /diplomacy status <nation>Check relationship with a nation
  • /diplomacy listYour nation’s wars & allies

Most action commands require the appropriate nation rank permission. Checking status is usually available to everyone.

Tips
  • Talk to the other nation before proposing — a refused proposal still uses a slot in your pending limit.
  • War only opens the door to sieges; you still need to actually plant the banner and fight.
  • Accepting peace is the cleanest way to stop ongoing sieges between two nations.
  • Use /diplomacy list regularly so you know who your allies and enemies are.
  • Alliances write through to Towny, so they affect more than just this plugin’s siege gate.
